Farmall "M"
Model Year: 1947

My father bought this tractor the year I was born he farmed with it daily until he retired. He purchased it new in 1947 with a loader for just under $2000.00 I farmed with it until I retired. It has one motor over hall and transmission bearing replacement can be done outdoors under a tree the In the later years I purchased a set of half-tracks and used it to cut fire wood in swamps. I hadn't started it for 2 months went out yesterday and it started on the second revolution. It is sparse on comfort but long on reliability.

Pros: Dependable.
Cons: Lacks every creature comfort of modern tractor.

This machine was apparently worked hard before I owned it and not well maintained. It has responded well to maintenance as required and continues to do yeoman's service in a non-production environment.

Pros: A good solid machine that does not want for torque.
Cons: Absence of three point hitch.

FARMALL Simplicity
Model Year: 1946

A simple easy tractor to use. Why do they have to complicate things nowadays with computer controlled everything?

Pros: Simple, easy to use, basic tractor. Air conditioned, and its red.
Cons: No power steering.

1947 Farmall M
Model Year: 1947

Showing its age, but still runs great and starts quickly. Has "aftermarket" front loader. Added a cable winch, to the FEL, for clearing dead trees. Purchased a grading blade and middle buster. Built a scarifier and a trencher for the 3-pt.

Pros: Starts quickly. Good power, for my use.
Cons: No power steering. With narrow front and FEL, hard to steer.

Reliable Old Workhorse
Model Year: 1947

This wonderful old tractor has been modified so many times it is almost hard to recognize. It is painted a faded yellow, it has an aftermarket wide front end, an aftermarket 3-point, an F-20 gas tank, etc. This must have been used after the Mt. St. Helens eruption (Eastern Washington), as it has a huge HUGE Caterpillar air filter added to it. I converted it to 12 volts and installed an electronic ignition kit. Regardless, it is a great old tractor, with lots of power. (It would appear to have the "power pack" installed, based upon the compression numbers.) Unlike most modern tractors, the 3-point has "down pressure" and lots of it. I can sink a sub-soiler 2 feet deep with it. It has broken a lot of hard ground. This is not a compact tractor, and needs a lot of room and strong arms to maneuver, but it just keeps on ticking. I've had this tractor for 20 years and can't say enough good about it. It also provides a lot of cheap humor to bystanders when they see me headed down the road (old fat bald man with a beard) on a pastel yellow tractor with that distinctive "M" exhaust sound.

Pros: So reliable, will work all day on a tank of gas
Cons: No comfort or safety features
