"Inherited this from my father, who used it mowing about 5 acres of hilly fields. Had an engine seal go a few years ago and now it's running rough (hence I joined TBN for help troubleshooting and fixing), but it's kept going for over 27 years. Still cuts nicely and it sure makes my 1.3 acre mowing job easier."

"I purchases my JD 316 to mow my lawn and maybe ad a tiller for the garden. I purchased it from an equipment auction for 900 in decent running order. It came with a 48" mower deck and had been repainted as well as had a new seat. I am unsure of any history on the tractor. I felt that paying 900 for this used tractor that is built like a tank was a better buy than going to a big box store and dropping $2,000 for something with similar features like hydrostatic and hydraulic deck lift, knowing that it would not be made near as well. I have used the mower for three years and the motor is tired and burns oil but still runs good. I plan to rebuild it before this mowing season."

Pros: Built to last. Cons: Parts can be expensive. Type of User: Homeowner 1-10 Acres Location: USA NY I also considered buying:

"Bought it in December 2011. It ran okay, but oil slinger broke causing connecting rod to break. This was the original motor. Considering how old it is and knowing what I paid for it, by the time I fix it it will still have a great value on it. Body is restored ready to paint. Not sure if I want to rebuild the Kohler, look for donor, or re-power."

Pros: Long lasting, built strong. Cons: Not sure. Type of User: Homeowner 1-10 Acres Location: USA MD I also considered buying:
