"John Deere 430 with 20HP Yanmar diesel engine: - Still mostly reliable, even being over 20 years old. - Usually has all the power I need for my small plot of land. - Love my bucket - but it is a little slow. - Pain to remove the belly mower. I've been looking for a power take-off mounted mower for years. - You can still find the attachments on eBay, although many of them are very expensive. It is better to buy them with the tractor if you can find a package deal. - Make sure you get one with the rear power take-off if you think you will use it. They are $600-800."

"owner of my John Deere 430 Garden Tractor. This machine has performed flawlessly. It has done all that I have asked it to do. Upon purchase I completely restored every component with new or rebuilt certain items except the engine. It has been regularly serviced by me or taken to a local John Deere service center. This is a great tractor, one of the best John Deere ever made. I will be keeping and using this tractor as long as parts are available either new, rebuilt or used. In mid -summer 2014 I have begun a mild restoration to include a repaint. If you can find a good 430 grab it! They don't make them like this anymore!"

REVIEWER'S ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Pros: Purpose built, longevity, great performance. I believe the yanmar diesel engine is underated. Fuel enconomy is good. Cons: Hydro operation can be a little jerky. Type of User: Homeowner 50-100 Acres Location: USA MD I also considered buying:

"I am the 3rd owner of this tractor. The person I purchased it from had done a partial restore with new paint and some parts being replaced. The owner prior to him was a hospital that used it for grounds upkeep and snow blowing. I currently use it for gardening which I use a plow, disk, cultivators, row hippers etc. I also use it with a 4'box blade for landscape work and gravel drive maintenance. I also use it to mow about an acre. Other than normal maintenance I have had to replace the front pto pully and belts, and replace fuel lines in the tank. I am currently preparing to go through the front end and steering linkages. I am very happy with this tractor. It does everything I need it to do."

REVIEWER'S ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Pros: A lawn and garden tractor heavy enough to do real work! Cons: Parts are getting hard to find, even from the dealer. Only 2000 rpm PTO attachments. Type of User: Homeowner 1-10 Acres Location: USA KY I also considered buying: John Deere 318, John Deere 425

"I bought this tractor brand new, with the mower, dozer blade, snow blower and cab. This unit has never been back to the dealer since the delivery. One of the best tractors I've had. I only wish I had bought the tiller then because now the rear PTO is not available for this tractor. No complaints about the tractor, it has been very reliable. I also pull a 6.0' land scape rake with it."

REVIEWER'S ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Pros: It does anything I ask of it. Cons: Lack of support for attachments. Type of User: Homeowner 1-10 Acres Location: USA IL I also considered buying:
