Massey Ferguson 2625 Posted by J Jex on 08/01/2018

Have had my Massey Ferguson 2625 for 9 years now and have had it in the shop 3 times. Compare that to my old MS 235 which still runs, works well, and starts every time I turn the key.

The first problem with the 2625 was during hay season the starter solenoid overheated, melting the plastic sheath and causing the plunger to be intermittently stuck in the ON position. It also caused the fuse to blow several times. Pretty scary! I took the starter solenoid apart and reamed the plastic sheath. A few years later Massey Ferguson recalled the solenoid but it was a bit late for me.

The next problem was that the tractor would sputter and stop after about 30 minutes in the field. After resting it would limp along for awhile. New fuel filters didn't work. I emptied the fuel tank and removed the tank-to-filter line and found lots of gunk inside. I later found that all diesel grows algae, especially in a partially empty tank. Not the manufacturer's fault but it was pretty frustrating. Never had that problem with my MS 235 that has a deeper tank on top. The 2625 has a vary shallow tank on top and is probably more prone to condensation when not full.

The last problem was that the 2625's power take-off just quit after 10 minutes of cutting hay. The 3-point arms and loader hydraulics were gone too. The hydro-static drive/steering still worked okay. After 3 weeks of diagnosis and discovery, I found sheered pins on the clutch plate. They held a disc that connected to the outer shaft powering hydraulic pump. I had to break the tractor in two to find the problem. Granted, there was no prior history of this type of failure but still not a pleasant surprise during hay time. The build may be old school but my old-school MS 235 hasn't had this problem.
